What a weekend…Lake Superior has never looked so lovely. Spent a couple of sunny days camped on the beach and enjoyed doing just about nothing. That said, I did get out on the lake in the ‘yak a couple of times–scared witless once, it’s a crazy/exhilarating/WTF feeling to be carried by big waves faster than you can paddle.
Returned to receive an e-mail with fantastic news from my friend Alex about the documentary he and his partner Tanya have been working on for the past couple of years. It’s going to premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival!! ‘Obscene’ didn’t have a title when I saw them in NYC this April, though they were getting pretty close to having a finished film. I’m so friggin’ proud of them and excited out of my head that a film of this nature will get great exposure at one of the premiere film festivals in the world.
One of the things that is so inspiring to me is that Tanya and Alex made this happen out of their desire to shed light on the film’s subjects (Barney Rosset, Grove Press, and–let’s not forget to mention–the first amendment). This was not some big studio production, funded by fat wallets. They (and a few colleagues) held a passion-filled vision for their creation and amazing things showed up on their path; they truly made it happen.
So, if you happen to be in Toronto at festival time, make an effort to check out the film. If not, keep your eyes and ears peeled for this film–and see it when you can.
