Drugs and Puppies! Save the Yuppies!

Posted by Gretchen Helmer on October 22, 2007. Filled under Uncategorized.

This provocative chant was mounted by actors from the zAmya Theatre Project as they satirically railed against stereotypes of the homeless (on drugs and, by extension of course, puppy killers) and the fear that some folks have around interaction with homeless folks. Quite an engaging 6 minutes of theatre and just one of 13 entries in a showcase of outside-the-box thinking to find Solutions to the challenges in our midst. From speaking the hopes and dreams of urban youth through public art installations to envisioning the I-35W bridge collapse and its rebuilding from a spiritual vantage to citizen guerrilla news gathering to the Smitten Kitten’s Coalition Against Toxic Toys and so much more, it was a Friday evening of ideas into action. And, since I’m an idea junkie, I was in heaven.

I seem to be stumbling across all sorts of inspiring people and ideas lately–a 30 day love blog, fairies of the toenail persuasion, reiki masters and animal totems and spirit guides (oh my!)–as well as all sorts of individuals who have been popping back into my life (ahem, yes, thanks in large part to facebook). Perhaps it’s because I’m more focused on inspiration than sorrow (though it’s true that one is often the yin to the other’s yang). And it’s likely because we find exactly what we’re looking for in situations, people, and the world.

What do you want to find?
